Participants and Efficiency Tips

Scott from What Was That Like is speeding up editing using keyboard shortcuts and a Red Dragon M908 Gaming Mouse (aff)

Craig from Live Well and Flourish is speeding up editing by using iZotope plugins. I use Dialogue Enhance 2.

Jill from Fit Stong Women Over 50 eliminates editing by doing more research for your interviews.

Branden uses the sound pads on the Zoom Podtrak P4 to help identify edit marks (he assigned tones from Audacity to the pads)

Karin from Just Grow Something uses templates where she adds all of the files she uses for her show and saves it as a template. Then opens the template and chooses "Save As," and gives it a new name (so the blank version of the episode stays blank).

Kim from the Pharmacists Voice also uses Templates for her audio, her images (using Canva), and anything else.

Jim from Home Gadget Geeks ensures any online tools (like auphonic) he uses take advantage of any integrations. Tools like Active Pieces and Zapier can tie two products together.

Mark Vinet from the History of North America and Historical Jesus batch records.

Steve Steward from the Podcast Editors Academy and his own Editing Service uses two monitors, which speed things up and make things less stressful.

Tips To Speed Up Your Podcast From Dave

Use the playback speed option in Audacity. It will make people sound like chipmunks, but every little bit helps.

Use Text Expander to create templates or anything you type over and over (Libsyn.com has a snippets feature as does Captivate, which has episode defaults (templates).

Podpage is a set-it-and-forget-it website tool. You create an episode, and it just appears on your website. You can learn Podpage for Free. Podpage also has an episode signature at the bottom of every episode on your site.

A Transcription service like Otter or any AI Transcription tools can be used for editing.

I use Evernote to organize my thoughts to avoid wasting time looking for things. A cheap alternative to Notedex.

Use a calendar scheduling tool like Acuity Scheduling, Tidycal (although it's having an issue), or Calendly. Using these tools takes the stress out of scheduling guests.

I Use Brandy to manage my Press kit.

Use your audience, who often have time, treasure, and talent, to help you with your show.

Pin a folder to the left navigation in Windows Explorer and the Finder on a Mac so you don't have to dig down to get to the folder.

Pay someone to do your editing.

Feed Drops and Collaboration: Exploring the Benefits and Techniques for Sharing Episodes.

This episode covered a wide range of topics, from recommendations vs feed drops to event experiences, audio engineering, and more. Here are three key takeaways that I think will be valuable for you:

The Power of Clear Communication: As podcast hosts, it's crucial to provide clear information about your show's theme or target audience. This helps potential guests understand the interview questions better, leading to more engaging and insightful conversations.

Navigating the Event Landscape: The episode delves into the speaker's experiences attending various conferences and events. They highlight the advantages of smaller, more intimate gatherings, such as Indipodcon in New Jersey. Smaller events foster meaningful connections and conversations, unlike larger conferences, which can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Feed Drops for Promoting Podcasts: Dave explains the concept of feed drops, where podcasters share an episode from another show on their own platform. We discuss two options: playing the entire episode or providing a host-read endorsement and linking to the episode. Feed drops can be a great way to collaborate and introduce your audience to new content.

It's Not As Hard As You Think

I just returned from speaking at the 40th high school reunion, where they asked me to speak. Speaking always makes me nervous, but due to this talk NOT being about podcasting, I was REALLY Nervous.

I followed my own advice and figured out who I was talking to, and what the goal of the talk was (point out that we survived), and then I found people to give me honest feedback before I had to deliver it. It worked. I got a fair amount of compliments.

The stress and hand shaking worry was not needed. I had done my homework. So I'm here to tell you from the other side, that the worry is more than likely not necessary (I know, easier said than done).

Spotify Video Experiment So Far

while I received hundreds of downloads of the audio of the ASk the Podcast show, and a decent amount of video views on YouTube. I have not received a single play on Spotify. Granted I have not promoted it (I promote my Youtube Channel) . I wanted to see what kind of organic traffic Spotify would bring. So far I haven't received any. I do have a niche show, but I wanted you to know.

Pinterest Really? Repurposing Content To Increase Your Reach and Exposure with Jeff Sieh

Jeff Sieh, a man wearing many hats, found himself in the heart of the digital world, not by chance but by curiosity and sheer determination. His journey wasn't a straight line. Jeff kept evolving from dabbling in corporate video production and website building to exploring social media. During one of these explorations, he stumbled upon Pinterest on a podcast. Hearing about the surge of traffic it brought to a blog stirred his interest. His first foray into Pinterest was a blog post, Manly Pinterest Tips #1, that resonated among the masses. That's when he realized the potential of Pinterest, not just as another social platform but as a visual search engine.

BUT I DIDN'T BRING JEFF ON TO JUST TALK ABOUT PINTEREST

Jeff has been shooting video for decades and does all of his shows LIVE. If you think about it, you can take this content and repurpose it in ANY format you want, but how do you do that without losing your mind? Jeff shares that today.

Podcasting For Your Job

Today someone asked, "

Can I protect my rights to a podcast if I do the podcast for the company I work for? My boss wants me to start a podcast for work. Under the slim chances this podcast gets big & starts to generate revenue, how do I protect my rights to it? I'm the host, I'm creating the content, I came up with the idea, the name, etc. We haven't started recording it yet, so I'm just trying to get ahead of the ball here. Not sure if I need to lawyer up or write a contract or what. Has anyone been through something similar?

We answer those questions and many others. Leave your question at www.askthepodcastcoach.com/ask

[Feed Drop] Building a Better Dave

Today I'm introducing you to a show with my smallest audience, but also my most vocal. If I go too long without an episode they let me know. This podcast is my audio diary. So yes:

  • I'm not trying to make money
  • I don't care about downloads
  • I'm just talking about me
  • I try to make it entertaining.

It is the cheapest therapy I've ever paid for. In today's episode you will hear my talk about a car accident I was in this week. It was a bad day.... or was it?

Unleash Your True Potential: Finding Your Voice and Unlocking Inner Power

One of the things podcasters say is “find your voice” without knowing that it’s Jargon. After all, is my voice lost? What does that mean? Today we will look at finding your voice, and I will tell you what the difference is to the listener. Because the interesting thing is your voice isn’t lost. It’s just got a lot of clutter on top of it.

What Does Finding Your Voice Mean?

You start your podcast (congrats!), and you feel uncomfortable. You feel out of place, and people say, "You need to find your voice." That is a really vague instruction.

Steps to Finding Your Voice

I mention this in almost every episode. It starts with specifically knowing your WHY and Your WHO.

The more information you have on each, the clearer the target. It is the blurryness and fuzziness vision of your show that leads to insecurity.

Who Are You and Who Aren't You?

What do you believe in? What are your values? By defining what you will and will NOT talk about help clear the path for your content.

The Netflix show House of Cards had a scene where the main character kills a dog in the first scene. This was on purpose, as they knew this would upset people. They thought, "Well, we might as well draw a line in the sand and offend people upfront. If they couldn't take the first episode, they would NEVER tolerate what else was coming in the remainder episodes.

Get Comfortable Through Practice

Think back to all the firsts in your life. The first step, first tricycle, bicycle, first kiss are things we weren’t good at when we started. So do it again, and again with the goal of improving with each version of your episodes getting better.

Acknowledge That This Will be Uncomfortable

When you feel yourself wanting to pull away or come back to it later, push through. If you’ve ever been through counseling of any sort (single, couples, etc) it is uncomfortable. However, you come out better on the other side. I dread getting on a treadmill but never regret getting off. So when you feel that uncomfortable feeling come upon you (and it will) embrace it. You're learning. You are growing. You are improving.

Not Everyone Will Like You, and That is OK

Life is not a popularity contest. That is one that is easy to say, but not always easy to live. As with everything, the more you practice it, the better you will get at it. So when you get your first one star review realize that the listener was not your target audience.

Follow Your Gut

There is only one of you. You are 100% unique so embrace that. Every night there are multiple stations covering the same topics. There are different strokes for different folks. Being you is very easy for you. When you try to be something you're not, it's very hard to pull off and often robs you of your passion.

Double Check the Facts In Your Head Saying Negative Things

Brenda was trying to prove herself to an invisible audience. She had assumed they wanted her to skim over a broad topic. When she got her episode in front of ACTUAL people she found they would rather go deep into a narrow topic.

In The End Be Yourself

In the end you've had an entire lifetime being you. Relax and embrace your uniqueness. Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, and Rod Stewart have unique voices. You either love them or hate them. Their uniqueness has enabled them to have careers spanning multiple decades.

QUESTION OF THE MONTH

Each month I ask the audience a question. This is your chance to get involved with the show. The question is inserted dynamically (so you need to go to the link below to answer). Provide your answer, and tell us about your show and provide your website. (free exposure!)
